Treatment Approach

Therapy is a useful space to better understand your difficult emotions, relieve emotional distress, and help you gain deeper self-awareness. It can also be helpful for learning new coping skills and in reaching your goals. In doing so, my hope is that clients are able to live with increased joy, meaning, and dignity, as well as a greater sense of freedom and vitality in their lives.

Working to build a warm, safe, and trusting relationship with me is fundamental to this process. I work collaboratively to develop individualized goals and regularly check in about the experience of therapy and our relationship.

My approach to treatment is integrative, meaning that I thoughtfully and flexibly incorporate different schools of thought to meet clients’ needs and preferences. Specifically, I have clinical and research expertise in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an empirically supported cognitive-behavioral treatment that emphasizes mindfulness, acceptance, and personal values in helping clients overcome obstacles in their lives.

I also have specialized postdoctoral training and over 10 years of clinical experience working from a psychodynamic/insight-oriented approach with a multidisciplinary team of professionals. This orientation helps individuals develop a greater awareness of their interpersonal patterns and internal conflicts which impact their current relationships. To the greatest extent possible, I incorporate my knowledge of the latest psychotherapy research into my practice.

The treatment of PTSD and other closely related anxiety and mood disorders has been the main clinical and research focus across my career. I am trained in all major first line treatments for PTSD and supervised postdoctoral fellows and psychology externs in the provision of these treatment modalities at the NYU School of Medicine for over a decade.
